Seismic Design Competition

EERI's Annual Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition (SDC) is a longstanding tradition at EERI's Annual Meetings and National Conferences. The competition provides civil engineering undergraduate students with an opportunity to work on a hands-on earthquake engineering project to design and construct a cost-effective frame building to resist seismic loading.

In 2022, over 40 teams from EERI Student Chapters at universities across the United States and around the world will be competing in the SDC. Each team has designed a complex tall building model made from balsa wood that will be tested on a shaking table. Student teams are judged on their oral design presentation, their summary poster, the model’s architectural design, their ability to fit within the design criteria and constraints, their analytical prediction of their model performance, and the response of their model during shaking table testing. All 12NCEE conference attendees will be able to observe the competition. Testing is currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 29.

The competition is hosted and organized by graduate students in EERI's Student Leadership Council. More information about the completion can be found at the SLC website here.
